2016-07-19  -  Postdoctoral/PhD Position – Network Structures in Multitrophic Plant-Microbe and Microbe-Microbe Interactions  -

1 Postdoctoral and 1 PhD Position on Network Structures in Multitrophic Plant-Microbe and Microbe-Microbe Interactions The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne, Germany invites applications for a postdoctoral position and a PhD position in the field of molecular plant-microbe interactions and computational biology. The postdoctoral position is available in the Max Planck Research Group on Fungal Biodiversity headed by Dr Eric Kemen. The PhD position is a shared project between the Max Planck Research Group on Resistance Pathway Dynamics in Plant Immunity headed by Dr Jane Parker and the group of Dr Eric Kemen. Background / Objectives Our focus is to unravel mechanisms in plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions that shape microbial community networks. For this, we work on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and have collected samples over several years from field plantings and wild populations. We have accessed a significant number of microbial isolates covering bacteria, fungi and protists. Using various high throughput sequencing techniques, we are characterizing microbial diversity and microbial functions and using statistical approaches to infer community structures. Models built from these data are used to generate hypothesis which are tested using reconstitution biology in gnotobiotic systems to reconstruct microbial networks in the laboratory. These approaches are combined with plant genetics to identify molecular mechanisms relevant for evolving and structuring microbial communities on plants. The selected candidates will use a combination of molecular biology, microbiology, genetics and computational biology. The candidates will be involved in sampling trips in the field, processing of samples for sequencing and computational data analyses, as well as microbial reconstitution assays. Methods will be adapted and developed according to needs for rigorously testing inferred hypothesis. Payment / Position The post-doctoral position for this project is available from October 01, 2016 for an initial period of one year and renewable depending on performance. The PhD position is available immediately. Salary and benefits are commensurate with public service organization rules (TVöD). The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. Their goal is to enhance the percentage of women where they are underrepresented. Women, therefore, are especially encouraged to apply. The Society is committed to employing more handicapped people. Applications of handicapped people are particularly welcome.

The Institute for Biomedical Engineering – Cell Biology at RWTH Aachen University Medical School is offering a position for a Bioinformatic Scientist (PhD Student or Postdoc; m/f) starting as soon as possible. We offer a position, which is initially limited for 2 years with the option for extension. The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L). We are analyzing mechanisms of cellular differentiation in various types of stem cells – particularly embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, hematopoetic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and dendritic cells. To this end, we are using own and public datasets that were generated by next generation sequencing (e.g. DNA-Seq, Chip-Seq, RNA-Seq) or microarrays (gene expression arrays and DNA-methylation platforms). The position is for a talented and motivated bioinformatics scientist that interacts closely with Wet-lab scientists of the groups of Prof. Martin Zenke (http://www.molcell.rwth-aachen.de) and Prof. Wolfgang Wagner (www.stemcellbiology.ukaachen.de). Particular focus is on epigenetic changes – e.g. histone modifications or DNA-methylation changes during differentiation, disease and aging. The lab will also validate and address bioinformatics hypotheses by genome editing technologies, such as CRISPR/Cas. Furthermore, bioinformatics research will be performed in collaboration with our colleagues at the IZKF Research Group Computational Biology (Dr. Ivan Costa; http://costalab.org) and the Joined Research Center for Computational Biomedicine at RWTH Aachen University (Professors Andreas Schuppert and Julio Saez-Rodriguez; www.combine.rwth-aachen.de) – thus, there is an excellent environment for your research.

2016-05-02  -  PhD & PostDoc Positions – Bioinformatics  -

The Bioinformatics group of Prof. Dr. Rolf Backofen is looking for a PhD student or Postdoctoral researcher In all model organisms a variety of non-coding RNAs have been found but so far their mode of actions and functions are almost unknown. Interactions between these ncRNAs and their targets often rely on direct RNA-RNA interactions, however, they are usually controlled by additional protein factors. In this project we will investigate the effect of an bacterial RNA helicase on RNA-RNA interactions to gain new insights in fundamental processes like regulation of gene expression, cell differentiation, and cellular stress adaption. The tasks of the candidate will include kinetic modeling of RNAs, design of RNA sense-antisense pairs, model optimization based on wet lab results, prediction of binding positions, and CLIPseq analysis.   The position is for initially 2 years with the possibility of extension. The salary will be determined in accordance with TVL-E13 (100 %).   Further information: http://www.bioinf.uni-freiburg.de/.

2016-04-21  -  Postdoc in proteomics : Heidelberg, Germany  -

The division 'Proteomics of Stem Cells and Cancer' is looking for a postdoc to strengthen its research in the area of cancer proteomics. Our division (headed by Prof. Jeroen Krijgsveld) is funded by the Excellence Cluster CellNetworks and is part both of the DKFZ and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University. We are housed in a fully newly equipped laboratory including state-of-the-art mass spectrometry (e.g. Orbitrap QE-HF and Fusion), and we collaborate with many groups on campus, in Heidelberg, and internationally. Our main research interest is to develop proteomic tools that help us to understand how the proteome is dynamically regulated in time and space, and how this underlies properties related to malignancy in cancer and to pluripotency in stem cells. Our current research focuses on the role of secretory proteins, protein interactions in chromatin, and proteins that interact with RNA. The postdoc position is available to work in the area of quantitative cancer proteomics, focusing on protein expression profiling and integration with NGS, or its intersection with chromatin biology and signal transduction, depending on the interest and expertise of the candidate.
